Home - How-To Guides - Notion Sites: Custom Domain Setup, Costs and SEO Limits

To publish a Notion page as a website, open the page, select Share at the top, open the Publish tab, and select Publish. Every free workspace gets one notion.site domain. Using a domain you already own requires a paid plan plus a custom domain add-on, billed at $10 per month, or $8 per month on annual billing.

That is the feature in three sentences, which is also a fair summary of Notion Sites: publishing takes seconds, and everything after it is where the real decisions sit. Plan gating, DNS records, slug rules, and a short list of things Notion does not offer decide whether this is the right place for your site.

Publish a Notion page as a website

  1. Open the page you want to publish and select Share at the top.
  2. Open the Publish tab.
  3. Select Publish.
  4. Select View site to load the live version in a browser.
  5. Return to Share → Publish and select Search engine indexing, then toggle on Discoverable on the web if you want the page to appear in search results.

Step five is the one people skip. Publishing makes a page reachable; it does not make it a candidate for search. On a paid plan the same panel lets you edit the link title and description used in search listings, the only metadata control Notion exposes.

The second thing to know before you click publish: publishing a page publishes every subpage beneath it, and every subpage beneath those. If your marketing page has a nested meeting-notes database three levels down, that database goes public too. Restrict subpage permissions first. If access behaves unexpectedly after publishing, the cause is usually inherited page permissions rather than the Publish tab itself, and our guide to why Notion permissions stop working and how to fix them walks through the inheritance rules.

One privacy detail worth reading twice. Notion’s documentation states that when a page is published to the web, the page metadata includes the names, profile photos, and email addresses of Notion users who contributed to it. For an internal wiki that gets published as a public handbook, that is a genuine data exposure, not a cosmetic issue.

What each plan actually gets you

Notion Sites is not a separate product with its own subscription. It rides on your workspace plan, and the split between free and paid is sharper than the marketing suggests. Notion’s Sites availability and pricing page lists the breakdown.

Notion’s pricing page lists Plus at $10 and Business at $20 per member per month on annual billing — paying monthly raises those to $12 and $24. Since Sites customization arrives at Plus, a solo operator who wants a favicon and a custom domain is looking at a seat charge plus the domain add-on, not the add-on alone. Our breakdown of Notion pricing across Free, Plus and Business covers how seat counts and proration interact with that.

Connect a custom domain: the DNS walkthrough

Notion does not sell domains. You buy the domain somewhere else, then point it at Notion. Only workspace owners on paid plans can do this, and the add-on has to be purchased before verification will succeed.

  1. Go to Settings in your sidebar, then open the Sites area. Notion’s help articles refer to this section as both Sites and Public pages depending on the article, so look for whichever label your workspace shows.
  2. Next to Domains, select New domain.
  3. Select Custom domain, then Continue. You will be asked to add a payment method for the add-on if one is not already on file.
  4. Enter your domain, then Continue. The domain must include a subdomain. www.example.com works, careers.example.com works, and a bare example.com does not.
  5. At your DNS provider, add a CNAME record. The host is your chosen subdomain, such as www. The target is external.notion.site. including the trailing period.
  6. Add the TXT record Notion generates. Copy both the record name and the value from Notion rather than typing them.
  7. Return to Notion and select Verify.

Three failure modes account for most botched setups. Notion’s custom domain documentation illustrates two of them with screenshots.

  • The CNAME host is filled in with the target. The host field takes your subdomain. external.notion.site belongs in the value field, never the host field.
  • The TXT record name is missing its prefix. Notion’s example shows a record named notes that should have been _notion-dcv.notes, with the value set to the unique code Notion generated, not a repeat of the name.
  • Cloudflare proxying is left on. Notion’s Cloudflare instructions call for Proxy status to be toggled off. Orange-cloud a Notion Site and verification will not complete.

For the root domain, Notion’s recommendation is to point www at the Site and configure a redirect from the bare domain at your DNS provider. That means anyone typing your domain without www hits a redirect hop before reaching content. Minor, but it is a hop that a self-hosted site would not have.

Billing gotchas with the custom domain add-on

The add-on is priced per domain, not per workspace. Notion charges $10 per month per connected domain, dropping to $8 per month with annual billing, and the add-on’s billing cadence is forced to match your subscription’s. Pay for Notion monthly and the domain is billed monthly too.

Add a domain mid-cycle and you pay a prorated amount for the remainder of that cycle, with the full charge folding into your normal invoice from the next billing date. Delete a domain and it keeps working until the end of the current billing cycle before the charge stops. Notion supports up to 25 custom domains per workspace, each one a separate add-on purchase, so a five-brand agency is looking at $40 to $50 a month in domain fees on top of seats.

Customization: favicon, navigation, homepage, dark mode

All of this lives behind one panel and requires a paid plan.

  1. Open Share on the published page, then Publish, then Site customization.
  2. Under Theme, select System, Light, or Dark. System follows the visitor’s device preference.
  3. Open the dropdown next to Favicon and select Page icon to reuse the page’s Notion icon, or Upload image for your own file.
  4. Select Header and toggle Breadcrumbs, Search, and Notion watermark. The watermark toggle only becomes available on a custom domain.
  5. Under Navigation, select Add page for each page you want in the top nav bar.
  6. Under Share preview, hover the preview card and select Upload image to replace the auto-generated social image.
  7. Select Publish changes at the top of the screen. Nothing you changed goes live until you do.

Notion documents one browser caveat: custom favicons are not currently supported in Safari. If a stakeholder reviews the site on a Mac and reports a missing icon, that is why.

Setting the site’s landing page is a separate operation, done from settings rather than from the page itself.

  1. Go to Settings in your sidebar, then Public pages.
  2. Find the domain, and under Homepage select Select a page.
  3. Search for and select the page. Only pages already published under that domain appear in the results, which is the step most people miss.

Connect Google Analytics

  1. Open Share on the published page, then Publish, then Site customization.
  2. Select Google Analytics.
  3. Paste your GA4 measurement ID.
  4. Select Publish changes.

This is a measurement ID field, not a general tag manager. Notion’s documentation describes a built-in Google Analytics integration and does not document support for arbitrary tracking scripts, Google Tag Manager containers, or third-party analytics. If your stack depends on injecting custom scripts, verify that against Notion’s current docs before committing.

The SEO limitations, stated honestly

Notion Sites will rank. Plenty of published Notion pages sit in search results. But the ceiling is lower than a real CMS, and the constraints are structural.

Indexing is slow. Notion’s own documentation warns that Sites can take up to four weeks to be indexed and appear in search results. Plan launches around that, not around a same-week expectation.

Slug management is manual and unforgiving. Slugs accept letters, numbers, and hyphens only, cap at 60 characters, and must be set individually for every page. A parent page’s slug does not cascade to its children. Homepages cannot have slugs at all. Slugs must be unique across the whole workspace even when pages live on different domains. Most consequentially: once you permanently delete a published page, its slug can never be reused, so rename before deleting if you might want that URL back.

Changing your domain breaks every existing URL. Notion states that if you switch to a new notion.site domain, links using the previous domain stop working and must be re-shared. The documentation does not describe any redirect mechanism for this, so treat a domain change as a hard URL reset and audit your inbound links first.

Technical SEO controls are absent from the documentation. Notion’s Sites help articles cover indexing toggles, title and description metadata, and Google Analytics. They do not document control over robots.txt, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, 301 redirects, hreflang, or structured data markup. Absence from the documentation is not the same as a confirmed impossibility, so verify anything your project depends on directly with Notion support before you build around it. But if your SEO plan requires per-page canonicals or redirect management, you should assume you will not get them here.

When not to use Notion Sites

Skip it if any of these describe your project.

  • You need gated content. Notion is explicit that published pages cannot be password protected. Private sharing means inviting people to the Notion page itself, which requires Notion accounts.
  • Your SEO strategy is the business. An affiliate site, a programmatic content play, or anything needing redirect control and schema markup will hit walls that no amount of configuration solves.
  • You are on Enterprise with publishing locked down. Workspace owners on Enterprise can toggle on Disable publishing sites, forms, and public links under Settings → Security, which takes every live Site down immediately and also blocks public forms.
  • You need design control. Theme, favicon, header, and a nav bar is the full customization surface. There is no CSS layer.

Where it earns its place: internal handbooks made external, job boards, changelogs, documentation, portfolios, and template landing pages. Content that already lives in Notion and needs a public URL is the sweet spot, especially when it is a database that updates continuously. Published database views stay live, and visitors can switch views and open individual records, so the structure of the database matters as much as the page design. Our Notion database guide covers the property and view decisions that carry through to the published site.

For teams weighing this as part of a wider Notion rollout, the tradeoffs around seats, guests, and permissions are covered in our write-up on Notion for teams and where it breaks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I publish a Notion page as a website for free?

Yes. Free workspaces can publish unlimited pages, claim one notion.site domain, and turn on search engine indexing. What free does not include is a custom domain, editable title and description metadata, custom slugs, favicon and header customization, or Google Analytics. Those all require a paid plan.

How much does a custom domain cost on Notion Sites?

Notion charges an add-on of $10 per month per domain on monthly billing, or $8 per month per domain on annual billing, on top of your paid workspace subscription. The add-on’s billing cadence must match your Notion subscription. You buy the domain itself from a registrar; Notion does not sell domains.

Why is my custom domain not verifying?

Check three things. The CNAME host should be your subdomain with external.notion.site. in the value field, including the trailing period. The TXT record name needs the _notion-dcv. prefix ahead of your subdomain. On Cloudflare, proxy status must be toggled off. DNS propagation can also delay verification.

Can I use my root domain without www?

Not directly. Notion requires a subdomain when you enter the domain, so the bare apex will not be accepted on its own. The documented workaround is to point www at your Notion Site and configure a redirect from the root domain at your DNS provider, which most registrars support in their forwarding settings.

Do Notion Sites rank well in Google?

They can rank, but with constraints. Notion warns indexing may take up to four weeks. Paid plans allow editing title and description metadata, and that is the extent of documented SEO control. Robots.txt, sitemaps, canonicals, redirects, and structured data are not covered in Notion’s Sites documentation, so verify before relying on them.
