Smartsheet MCP Claude Integration: Complete Setup Guide (2026)
You can connect Claude to Smartsheet in about ten minutes with the official connector. In Claude, open Customize > Connectors, find Smartsheet, click Connect, sign in, and pick your region. The connector uses Smartsheet’s MCP server. It needs a Smartsheet Business, Enterprise or Advanced Work Management plan. Claude can then read your sheets, write summaries, and update rows you already have rights to.
Smartsheet made the Claude connector generally available on March 2, 2026, per its launch post. I have set it up for project teams, and the setup is the easy part. The real work is deciding what Claude may change. This guide covers both, using Smartsheet’s help center, checked in October 2026.
What MCP means here, in plain words
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use outside tools in a controlled way. Smartsheet runs an MCP server. When you connect Claude to it, Claude can call Smartsheet “tools” like reading a sheet or updating a row. You do not need to write code or manage API keys for Claude’s web or desktop app. Sign-in uses OAuth, which means you log in with Smartsheet and approve access.
Before you start: requirements
| Need | Details |
|---|---|
| Smartsheet plan | Business, Enterprise or Advanced Work Management |
| Claude account | Any active Claude plan |
| Claude org setting | A Claude Owner must enable the Smartsheet connector for your organization |
| Smartsheet admin setting | “Claude Connector” AI capability must be on (it is on by default for eligible plans) |
| Region | US, EU or AU |

Smartsheet Pro is not on the list. If you are on Pro, the connector is not available to you.
Setup: step by step
These steps follow Smartsheet’s Access Smartsheet in Claude guide.
- Open Claude (web or desktop) and sign in.
- Go to Customize > Connectors.
- If Smartsheet is not listed, click the search icon and search for “Smartsheet.”
- Select it, then click Connect.
- A Smartsheet sign-in page opens. Log in and click Allow.
- Pick your region’s server. US is
https://mcp.smartsheet.com, EU ishttps://mcp.smartsheet.eu, and AU ishttps://mcp.smartsheet.au. - You will see a Configure button and the server URL. That means it worked.
- Start a new chat and switch on the Smartsheet connector for that chat.
Test it with a read prompt first: “List the sheets in my Project Office workspace.” Then try one safe write in a test sheet. Delete the test row by hand afterward.
If you pick the wrong region
Your region choice is saved. You cannot just change it in settings. To switch, remove the connector, add it again, and pick the new region.
Using Claude Code or other tools
Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Gemini CLI can also connect to the same MCP server. For those tools you usually need a Smartsheet API token instead of OAuth. Smartsheet’s MCP server install guide links to the steps for each one. Treat that token like a password. It has your full access.
Lock down what Claude can change
This is the step most teams skip, and the one I care most about. In Claude, go to Customize > Connectors > Smartsheet > Configure. Every Smartsheet tool gets one of three settings:
- Always allow: runs with no prompt.
- Needs approval: asks you first. If you say no, it skips.
- Blocked: never runs.
My setup for most teams:
- Read tools: Always allow. Reading is low risk and you will use it all day.
- Write tools: Needs approval. You see each change before it happens.
- Anything that changes many rows at once: Needs approval, always.
Claude can only touch sheets and workspaces you already have access to. It works with your Smartsheet permissions, not around them. Your Smartsheet system admin can also turn read or write access on or off for the whole company. Smartsheet says data and prompts are processed to answer your request and are not used to train models.
Five uses that save real time
Smartsheet’s usage guide has many prompt ideas. These are the ones that pay off first in my experience:
- Weekly status draft. “Read the Q4 Project Tracker. List every row that is Red or Yellow with owner, due date and the latest comment. Group by owner. Add a two-line summary at the top.”
- Slip warning. “What is due in the next two weeks that is still Not Started or In Progress?”
- Stale work. “Which rows have not been updated in two weeks?”
- Meeting notes to rows. Paste your notes and say: “Pull out each action item with owner and due date, and add rows to the Action Items sheet with Status = Not Started.” Approve each write.
- Cross-sheet roll-up. “Count tasks by status across these three sheets and list anything Blocked.”
Tips for better answers
- Name the sheet and the time frame. “This week” or “Q1” beats “recently.”
- Tell Claude your columns. For example: “Status is a dropdown: Green, Yellow, Red.” This cuts mistakes.
- Analyze first, then change. Ask for a list. Check it. Then ask Claude to update.
- Ask for a format. Table, bullets or email draft.

Gotchas and limits
- It works on your permissions. If you are a Viewer on a sheet, Claude cannot edit it either.
- Big sheets give rough answers. On sheets with thousands of rows, ask about a filtered slice, like one project or one month.
- It is not a scheduler. Claude acts when you ask. For rules that run on their own, use Smartsheet automations.
- Check numbers before you send them. AI summaries can miss rows. For anything going to leaders, spot-check totals against a report.
- Admin features stay manual. Use Smartsheet itself for sharing settings, user management and Control Center work.
MCP or Zapier and Make?
| Use Claude MCP when | Use Zapier or Make when |
|---|---|
| A person asks a question or wants a summary | Something must happen automatically every time |
| The task needs judgment, like writing a status update | The steps are fixed, like “new form, new row” |
| The work is ad hoc | It runs all day with no one watching |
Most teams end up with both. Rules handle the routine. Claude handles the reading, writing and judgment.
When NOT to use it
- Regulated data you cannot send to an AI tool. Check your company’s AI policy first.
- Pro plan accounts. It is not available.
- Bulk edits with no review. If you would not let a new hire do it unchecked, do not let Claude do it on “Always allow.”
Common questions
Which Smartsheet plans support the Claude connector?
Business, Enterprise and Advanced Work Management. Pro is not supported.
Do I need an API key to connect Claude to Smartsheet?
Not for Claude on the web or desktop. You sign in with OAuth. Tools like Claude Code may need a Smartsheet API token.
Can Claude delete or change my sheets?
It can only change what you have rights to change. You can set each write tool to Needs approval or Blocked under Customize > Connectors > Smartsheet > Configure.
Is my Smartsheet data used to train Claude?
Smartsheet says data and prompts are processed only to fulfill your request and are not stored or used for model training.
How do I change my Smartsheet region in Claude?
Remove the connector, add it again, and choose the new region during setup.
Can my admin turn it off?
Yes. A Smartsheet system admin can turn the Claude connector capability or its read and write access on or off in Admin Center.
