Fix monday.com notifications not working

Most monday.com notification failures come down to two settings, not a bug: an event type switched off under My profile > Notifications, or a board set to Mute all. Check both before anything else. Fixing them restores bell, email and mobile alerts at once, since all three read the same personal settings.

The three layers that decide if you get pinged

monday.com has no single master switch for alerts. Three layers have to agree before anything reaches you, and monday.com’s own guide to how notifications work splits them exactly this way. Your personal settings decide which types of event you can be notified about, your board settings decide which boards those events may come from, and the delivery channel decides whether the message physically lands.

The middle layer catches most people out. Being added to a board as a subscriber does not mean you are pinged for every change on it. monday.com notifies you about items you are assigned to, items you created or subscribed to, updates where you were mentioned, and automations that name you. If a colleague moved a status on an item you have no relationship with, silence is documented behaviour, not a fault.

ChannelWhere the switch lives
Bell (in monday)Profile picture > My profile > Notifications
EmailSame tab, Email column of the notifications table
Desktop pop-upsSame tab, toggle at the bottom of the page
Mobile pushSame tab, plus your device’s app permissions
Per-board mutingBoard three dot menu > Notifications
Slack / MS TeamsBell icon > settings cogwheel

Fix your personal notification settings first

These settings apply across every board you are subscribed to, so a single wrong toggle here explains account-wide silence.

  1. Click your Profile picture in the top right corner.
  2. Select My profile and open the Notifications tab.
  3. Review the sections for Bell, Email and Mobile notifications.
  4. Turn on the event types you want back: assignments, updates, mentions and automation notifications each have their own row.
  5. Do nothing else. Changes save automatically and apply across all boards.

There is a faster route from the notification itself. Click the bell icon, click the three dots to the right of any notification, then choose Change notification settings to land on the same page. From the bell’s own three dot menu you can also open settings, which shows the same preferences laid out as In monday, Email and Desktop columns.

If you administer the account, you can edit another user’s settings from Administration > user management > the user’s name > Notifications tab. Note that Administration > Customization > User notifications sets defaults for new users only and leaves existing users untouched, so fixing it there does nothing for the person complaining.

Check whether the board itself is muted

If notifications work everywhere except one board, the board-level setting is almost certainly the culprit.

  1. Open the board and click the three dots in the top right corner.
  2. Select Notifications to open the board notification settings.
  3. Under My notifications, check whether Mute all is selected. That mutes every notification-triggering action on the board for you alone.
  4. Switch to Receive all to restore the default, or pick Custom and tick the specific categories: Mentioned me, Assigned me and Automations with a ‘notify’ step.
  5. If you own the board, check the Mute for everyone toggle as well. Board owners can silence a board for every subscriber at once, and the option is hidden from non-owners. Click Save after changing it.

Worth calibrating expectations on Receive all. It does not mean every change on the board reaches you. monday.com defines it as all notifications relevant to your relationship with the board’s items, so activity you have no connection to still stays quiet.

Email notifications that never arrive

Email has two separate failure modes: monday.com never sent it, or it sent it and something in transit ate it. Work through them in order, following monday.com’s own checklist for missing emails from monday.com.

  1. Open Profile picture > My profile > Notifications and confirm the boxes are ticked in the email column for the events you care about, particularly assignments.
  2. Confirm the relevant board is not set to Mute all in its board notification settings.
  3. Search your spam or junk folder for messages from monday.com.
  4. Add notifications@monday.com to the approved sender list in your mail client. That is the address monday.com names for notification delivery.
  5. If the whole team is affected, ask IT to allowlist *monday.com at the mail gateway rather than fixing it inbox by inbox.
  6. If you are a guest on the account, confirm the board was shared with you directly and that your guest account is active. Guests receive a narrower set of notifications depending on how the board and account are configured.

One quiet cause of a single category disappearing: every monday.com notification email carries a stop these emails link at the bottom, which unsubscribes you from that type. If mentions still arrive but invitation confirmations do not, someone clicked it and the fix is a tick box in the Notifications tab.

Desktop pop-ups not appearing

Desktop notifications mirror your bell notifications and appear at the top right of your screen, so they are useful precisely when you are working outside monday.com.

  1. Click your Profile picture in the upper right corner and select My profile.
  2. Open the Notifications tab and scroll to the bottom of the page.
  3. Toggle desktop notifications to Enable. A greyed-out toggle means they are currently disabled.

If the toggle is on and nothing appears, the block is downstream of monday.com. Your browser holds its own per-site permission for notifications and must be granted it before anything renders, and your operating system’s focus mode suppresses banners silently. Neither layer can be overridden from inside monday.com.

Mobile push notifications

monday.com describes mobile push as synonymous with your bell notifications. That is the key diagnostic: if the bell feed is empty, the phone will be silent too, and the fix belongs in your personal settings rather than on the device.

  1. Confirm the event types are enabled in the Mobile section of My profile > Notifications.
  2. Open your device settings, find the monday.com app and confirm push notifications are permitted for it. monday.com’s troubleshooting names app permissions as the usual cause when alerts appear on desktop but not mobile.
  3. Update the app. Out-of-date builds are the second cause monday.com lists.
  4. Check your device’s focus or do-not-disturb schedule, which suppresses delivery without any signal in the app.
  5. Confirm you are signed into the account that owns the boards. Multi-account users often have the wrong one loaded on mobile.

Automations that stopped notifying people

If a recipe with a notify step is not firing, monday.com states plainly that this is usually not a bell or email settings issue. Diagnose the recipe instead.

  1. Open the board and click Automate in the top right.
  2. Select Communication in the left panel to see the notification recipes on the board.
  3. Open the recipe that should be firing and verify that you are one of the targeted people, or that the people column the recipe points at genuinely contains you. That is monday.com’s documented first check.
  4. Confirm the trigger condition matches reality. A recipe watching for one status label will not fire when a different label is set, even if they look similar on the board.
  5. Go back to the board’s notification settings and confirm that Custom has not excluded Automations with a ‘notify’ step.

For teams drowning in board-wide noise, monday.com’s own recommendation inverts what most people try: set high-activity boards to Mute all and rebuild alerting with targeted notify automations, so people are told only when something needs action. Our walkthrough of monday.com’s automation setup covers how those recipes are wired.

Slack and Microsoft Teams relays

Both integrations connect from the same place. monday.com documents the steps in its guide to notifications via automations and integrations.

  1. Click your bell notifications icon in the top right.
  2. Click the settings cogwheel.
  3. Select Connect Slack or Connect MS Teams.
  4. Click Allow, then Authorize to complete the connection.

Two things to check before blaming the integration. First, guests are not permitted to enable Slack notifications, so a guest seat will never see them regardless of configuration. Second, look at your bell feed for the notification you expected. If monday.com never generated it, there is nothing for Slack or Teams to relay, and the real fault is one layer further up.

Edge cases worth ruling out

The notification expired. monday.com keeps notifications for six months and then deletes them. The bell’s search covers six months back or your last 1,250 notifications, whichever comes first, so an old alert that has vanished has not been lost by a bug.

You were mentioned as part of a team. Team mentions appear only in the All tab of the bell, not in the Mentioned tab. Anyone who lives in the filtered view will believe they were never tagged.

Someone edited an update instead of posting a new one. Editing an existing update does not send a fresh notification. If a colleague keeps amending the same post to report progress, nobody is being told.

If noise rather than silence is what drove you here, platform design matters. Our comparison of monday.com and ClickUp covers how each handles subscription models, and the breakdown of Microsoft Project, monday.com and Asana helps if you are weighing a heavier project tool against a collaborative one.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get bell notifications but no emails?

The two channels have separate columns in the same settings table, so email can be off while the bell is on. Check the email column under My profile > Notifications first, then your spam folder, then whether notifications@monday.com is allowlisted in your mail client.

I am a board member, so why am I not notified about everything?

That is intended behaviour. Joining a board makes you a subscriber, but monday.com only notifies you about items you are assigned to, items you follow or created, updates where you were mentioned, and automations that name you. Unrelated changes on the board deliberately produce nothing.

Will my team be notified if I edit an update I already posted?

No. monday.com does not send a new notification when an existing update is edited. To alert people about each new development, post a fresh reply rather than amending the original, or include an @mention in every new entry so the notification actually fires.
