monday.com Formula Column 2026: Functions, Limits, and the Automation Workaround
The monday.com formula column calculates per item from other columns using Excel-style functions (IF, SUM, WORKDAYS, ROUND, …). It is a Pro and Enterprise column type — Basic and Standard will not show it in the Column Center.
monday’s own Formula use cases article (checked October 13, 2026) is blunt: formula output is read-only and cannot trigger automations, reliable emails, or many dashboard widgets until you copy the result into a regular Numbers or Text column with a workflow.

Add a formula column
- Board → + → More columns → search Formula → add.
- Click a cell → open the builder.
- Insert columns from Columns & labels (curly braces like
{Budget}). - Insert functions from the function list.
- Watch for red syntax errors → Set formula.
Rename the column for the output (“Margin %”), not “Formula.”

The automation workaround (required reading)
- Keep the Formula column as the source of truth for the calculation.
- Create a Numbers or Text column (
Margin Copy). - Build a workflow: when formula changes / item created → copy formula value to
Margin Copy(or use a marketplace column-copy app if your workspace standardizes on one). - Point automations, email templates, mirrors, and widgets at
Margin Copy.
Same pattern when charts show zero for formula columns or mirrors look empty.
What formulas cannot do
- Trigger automations directly.
- Write into another column by themselves.
- Reliably feed every dashboard widget.
- Reference arbitrary items on other boards like a full spreadsheet model — keep cross-board logic in mirrors + copied values.

Common questions
What plan includes the formula column?
Pro and Enterprise. Upgrade or calculate outside monday if you are on Standard.
Why won’t my automation see the formula?
Formulas are read-only dynamic values. Copy to a normal column first.
Can I reference other boards?
Not like a full relational spreadsheet. Use mirror columns and copy mirrored values into writable columns when automations need them.
Why is my formula red?
Syntax error: missing parenthesis, bad column name, or unclosed quotes. Re-insert columns from the picker.
