Basecamp Pricing 2026: Every Plan, What It Costs, and the Break-Even Math
Basecamp has five tiers in 2026: Free (1 project), Freelancer at $25/month (3 active projects, up to 20 users), Studio at $59/month (10 active projects, unlimited users), Pro at $99/month (25 active projects), and Unlimited at $299/month billed annually (unlimited projects, 1 TB). Studio and above have no per-user fees.
That is from basecamp.com/pricing, checked October 14, 2026. The cap that matters is active projects: archived or deleted projects do not count, so a team can have dozens of old projects on Studio as long as only 10 are active at once.

Every paid tier has a free trial: 30 days, or 45 days on Unlimited. All tiers list AI connectors for ChatGPT and Claude and support for bringing your own AI agents. Project templates and multiple tools per project start on Studio, time tracking starts on Pro, and enhanced admin features are Unlimited-only. Unlimited also adds priority support, personalized onboarding, and payment by check, ACH, or wire. Extra storage on Unlimited is $100/month for another 5 TB.
Break-even against per-user tools
Basecamp’s appeal is flat pricing. Compare it with per-user tools at their yearly prices (Asana Starter $10.99, ClickUp Unlimited $7, monday.com Standard $12 per seat):

Basecamp Studio is cheaper than Asana Starter from about 6 people and cheaper than ClickUp Unlimited from about 9 people. Pro breaks even around 10 to 15 people. The larger the team, the more flat pricing wins, provided you stay under the project cap.
Which tier fits
- Free: testing Basecamp or one small client project with up to 5 people.
- Freelancer: a solo consultant inviting clients, up to 20 people and 3 active projects.
- Studio: small agencies and teams with up to 10 live projects. The best value for most.
- Pro: busier agencies running up to 25 active projects, or anyone needing time tracking.
- Unlimited: organizations with many concurrent projects, large file storage, or procurement needs like invoicing.
Where Basecamp is the wrong buy
Basecamp is deliberately simple. It has to-dos, message boards, chat, schedules, card tables, and docs, but no Gantt dependencies, workload planning, or deep custom fields. What “active project” means, and how teams game it honestly
Basecamp counts only active projects. Archived and deleted ones do not count. This is the key to picking a tier.
How agencies I work with stay on Studio (10 active projects):
- Archive the day a project ends. Archived projects stay searchable and can come back later.
- Use one “Clients – small jobs” project for quick one-off tasks, instead of a new project for each.
- Keep internal work in one or two projects, like “Team HQ” and “Marketing”.
If you still have more than 10 live client projects most months, Pro (25 projects) is the honest answer. Juggling archives every week wastes more time than $40 a month.
Real-world cost per person
Flat pricing gets cheaper per person as you grow:

At 100 people, Unlimited costs about $3 per person per month. Almost no per-user tool comes close at that price, as long as you only need what Basecamp does.
Gotchas before you buy
Freelancer caps people, not just projects. It allows up to 20 users. Clients you invite count. A consultant with 3 clients and 5 contacts each is near the limit.
Storage can bite creative teams. Studio has 25 GB. A design team sharing large files can fill that in months. Keep big files in Google Drive or Dropbox and link them.
Time tracking starts on Pro. If you bill by the hour and want time inside Basecamp, Studio will not do it.
Enhanced admin is Unlimited-only. If IT needs more control over access and permissions, budget for Unlimited.
Unlimited is billed annually. That is $3,588 up front for the year. Small teams often prefer Pro for cash flow.
What experienced Basecamp teams do differently
- They write instead of meet. Basecamp’s message boards and “check-ins” (automatic questions like “What did you work on today?”) replace many status meetings. Teams that keep all their meetings get less value.
- They use Hill Charts. A Hill Chart shows if each piece of work is still being figured out (uphill) or just being done (downhill). It is a better signal than “60% complete”.
- They keep clients in the loop with care. Basecamp lets you choose what clients can see. Check the visibility setting on each post before you share bad news.
When NOT to choose Basecamp
- You need Gantt charts with dependencies (one task can’t start until another ends).
- You need workload views to see who is over capacity.
- You need detailed custom fields and reports.
- Your company already pays for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and only needs simple task lists. Planner or Google Tasks might be enough, at no extra cost.
Which tier I would pick
- Solo freelancer with a few clients: Freelancer.
- Small agency or team under 10 live projects: Studio. Best value.
- Busy agency or anyone needing time tracking: Pro.
