Home - How-To Guides - Airtable After Bending Spoons (Oct 12, 2026): What ‘Back to Bases’ Means for Your Workspace

On October 12, 2026, Airtable published Back to bases: What’s next at Airtable under new product lead Alessandro Savarese. The same note is mirrored on Bending Spoons’ newsroom. Bending Spoons closed the Airtable acquisition in early September 2026; this is the first clear public product roadmap since then.

If you run bases in production, three lines matter:

  1. Your plan, price, and service offering do not change — Airtable says so explicitly.
  2. They are parting with a large portion of the pre-acquisition team this week, with separation packages; customer-facing org is described as intact.
  3. Near-term bets are core product fixes, AI that works beside automations, and account-level admin control — not a surprise rebrand of your bases.

I am not going to invent headcount numbers. Airtable did not publish a layoff count in the note.

What already shipped (last three weeks)

Airtable says a small Speedy Squad shipped more than 30 improvements, including higher automation limits, a delete record automation action, and finer edit permissions on list pages. That squad folds into a new Core team that will run monthly sprints against top customer requests.

AdminAgent permissions (Enterprise), audit logs, credential/lineage visibility, BYO encryption/modelsRolling AI out without losing sleep

AI pieces called out for “coming weeks”

  1. Omni upgrade — build workflows from your data.
  2. Airtable Canvas — custom apps on your data.
  3. Stronger MCP — so external AI tools can work with Airtable.
  4. Bring-your-own agent and keys — trigger your agents from automations.

None of that is a reason to migrate tomorrow. It is a reason to keep an eye on automation limits and MCP permissions if you already prototype agents against Airtable.

What I would do this week as a workspace admin

  • Screenshot your plan page and automation usage now — so you have a baseline if limits move again.
  • Inventory automations that depend on brittle workarounds the Speedy Squad may have replaced (delete-record was called out for a reason).
  • Do not freeze hiring of Airtable specialists solely on layoff headlines; do insist vendors show a support path and named CSM if you are on Enterprise.
  • Re-read Interface / Extension bets if you were mid-build on custom UI — Canvas is on the near-term list; sequence work so you are not rebuilding twice. See our Interface Extensions SDK notes.
  • If you were comparing Airtable to Notion or ClickUp this quarter, keep product fit primary; pricing drama is not the story Airtable told on Oct 12. Useful context: Airtable vs ClickUp and best PM tools.

What this is not

  • Not a price increase announcement.
  • Not a feature-deprecation list.
  • Not permission to ignore vendor risk — acquisitions always carry execution risk. The honest read is: smaller team, louder focus on core + AI governance, customer commercial terms held steady.

Airspace London is called out for October 21, 2026 if you want the in-person version.

Common questions

Did Airtable change pricing on October 12?

No. The Back to Bases note says plan, price, and service offering stay the same for customers.

Is the product going away?

Nothing in the note says that. The stated vision is a unified platform for teams, data, workflows, and agents.

Should I pause an Airtable rollout?

Only if your risk committee already required post-acquisition stability gates. Commercially, Airtable says nothing changes. Operationally, watch automation limits and AI admin controls as they ship.
